Is It Cancer of the Prostate?

Any problems related to the prostate can be troubling. The symptoms of a prostate problem can range from mild troubles urinating to extreme pain in the hip or pelvic region. Instead of putting off an exam, you should have the prostate checked as soon as possible. A doctor will determine the cause of your symptoms and advise you on ways to manage them, through either medical treatment or lifestyle adaptations. Even if the prostate is found to be cancerous, this is one of the most treatable forms of cancer when caught in the earlier stages, with a 99% survival rate according to a five year study conducted by the Mayo Clinic.

An enlarged prostate isn't an unusual condition for a man in his middle-age years or above to suffer from. Another fact about the prostate is that nearly one-fourth of men studied showed cancerous cells in their prostate but not all of these men went on to develop cancer of the prostate. One of the side effects of an enlarged prostate is a weak flow of urine or the urge to urinate frequently. Unfortunately this is one the hallmark signs of cancer of the prostate as well. Only an examination by a physician can pinpoint the cause.

There are other symptoms that will call for a trip to the doctor's office to ascertain if the prostate is being affected by a benign or cancerous cause. Other symptoms will include a weak or interrupted flow of urine, a need to urinate and then trouble emptying the bladder, as well as pain or burning during urination. These are all signs that something is amiss with the prostate gland.

One symptom that usually results in a quick trip to the emergency ward is when a man discovers tinges of blood in his semen or urine. Painful ejaculation is another reason many men eventually seek help. When the symptoms of an enlarged prostate are ignored over a period of time, generally they escalate and won't be relieved until you seek help.

A pain in the back, hips or pelvis that is constant and does not diminish, is a stark sign that you should get your prostate checked. Pain is always a signal that something is amiss in the body and should never be ignored. If you've put off getting your prostate symptoms checked because you fear a diagnosis of cancer, the good news is that cancer of the prostate, when caught in the early stages, is one of the most treatable forms of cancer and there are several different ways this cancer can be treated.

If you've been suffering from prostate related symptoms, don't hesitate any longer and schedule an appointment with your primary care physician as soon as possible. Not only are prostate problems caused by a simple enlarged prostate, other conditions such as benign prostatic hyperplasia, prostate cancer, diabetes and high blood pressure can all show symptoms through the enlargement of the prostate gland as well. Seek treatment. If you have a chronic condition such as cancer of the prostate or diabetes, it should be addressed and treated as early as possible in the cycle of the disease.
